Dr Teresa Housel
Senior Tutor in Communications & Public Relations
School of Humanities Media and Creative CommMy academic research covers journalism, mental health, cultural studies, technology and society, media history, and teaching pedagogy. I have a keen interest in the cultural, academic, and emotional transitions of first-in-the-family students (students who are first in their families to attend university).
I’ve edited four books on first-in-the-family students and health care disparities that impact LGBTQIA+ people. I’ve also published academic journal articles on homelessness, alternative media, coverage of environmentalism in the media, and the politics of housing. My book, Mental Health Among Higher Education Faculty, Administrators, and Graduate Students: A Critical Perspective (Lexington Books),was published in 2021. My co-edited book, On the Front Lines: Women Educators’ Experiences During the COVID-19 Pandemic, was published in 2023. Most recently, my non-fiction memoir essay, “Toy Train,” appeared in the NZ-authored anthology Rere Takitahi/Flying Solo (Olearia Press, 2024).
