While workplace cyber abuse is a growing challenge for many organisations, most still struggle to deal with it effectively, say researchers from 暴风资源鈥檚 Healthy Work Group.

In a report funded by聽NetSafe鈥檚 Online Safety Partnership Grant, Dr Natalia D鈥橲ouza, Dr Kate Blackwood and Dr Darryl Forsyth analysed data from 205 victims to better understand the barriers to reporting and resolving cases of workplace cyber abuse.

Dr D鈥橲ouza says there are some specific features of cyber abuse, which includes cyberbullying, cyber sexual harassment, cyber discrimination and cyber stalking, that make it difficult to deal with.

鈥淐yber abuse has some additional impacts when compared to face-to-face bullying and abuse,鈥 she says. 鈥淲e found that 66 per cent of the cases our research participants discussed occurred in a public forum, including on social media, and one-third of incidents were perpetrated anonymously.鈥

She says this is an area where processes and procedures have lagged behind technological and social developments.

鈥淲e really need more research on what can be done when the perpetrator can鈥檛 be identified because organisations tend to deal with workplace bullying through mediation. That doesn鈥檛 work with anonymous cyber abuse.鈥

People don't report cyber abuse

The study also found nearly half of participants experienced multiple forms of cyber abuse and nearly 85 per cent of targets experienced repeated cyber abuse, all of which also increases the harm experienced.

Dr D鈥橲ouza says the most worrying finding was that more than three-quarters of those surveyed said they did not report the cyber abuse to their organisation. And of those who did report abuse, more than one-fifth found there was no organisational response.

鈥淲e know that a lot of organisations actually don鈥檛 have any policies around these issues, and when they do intervene, it鈥檚 often with mediation or counselling, which does not always address the underlying issues.鈥

Survey respondents said being able to block the abuse was the most useful response, while organisational policies and interventions were ranked as the least useful.

鈥淭hat should give organisations some food for thought,鈥 Dr D鈥橲ouza says, 鈥渁s either there are no cyber abuse policies in place, or employees don鈥檛 trust that organisations will be able to do anything about it if they report an incident.鈥
