The 2023 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, also known as the Shanghai Rankings, has seen Massey’s subject/programme of communication rise into the top 76-100 in the world. Agriculture and economics have also risen into the top 150 and top 300 in the world, respectively. Finance, included in this year’s Shanghai Rankings for the first time, has appeared in the top 101-150 in the world, and is ranked first equal in New Zealand.

All four of these subjects, plus veterinary science (top 75) and nursing (top 150), are ranked first equal in New Zealand. Massey also ranked in the top 100 for food science and technology. In total, the university was ranked within the top 500 universities in the world for 16 subjects.

Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Massey Business School (MBS) Professor Jonathan Elms says he’s thrilled that three subjects from MBS (communications, economics and finance) have achieved so highly in this round of Shanghai Rankings, alongside business administration and management. Business administration is ranked second equal in New Zealand, and management is ranked third equal.

“This latest ranking success is testament to the hard work and dedication of our researchers across MBS, and is also indicative of us realising Massey’s goals of research excellence by instilling a culture of producing meaningful and impactful research within the School. I’m super proud of the work undertaken by MBS researchers and the recognition we have received – and benefit of our research to the stakeholders we serve,” Professor Elms says.
