The 71st聽cohort聽of Massey鈥檚 School of Aviation聽have聽just celebrated getting their commercial pilot鈥檚 licence, or 鈥榃ings鈥,聽which for聽many聽is聽as significant as their聽official聽graduation ceremony.聽

The ceremony takes place as each聽cohort聽completes the flight-training聽component聽of the Bachelor of Aviation degree聽and celebrates outstanding success within the group.聽

Dion Chew, from Singapore, has been awarded the聽暴风资源 School of Aviation Outstanding Student Award聽and has聽also been聽accepted聽聽into the聽Flight Instructor聽Course聽for the final year of his degree.聽

This聽an opportunity that is聽only offered to聽a very small聽number of聽students but one聽he is聽honoured聽to achieve聽he says; 鈥淚鈥檓 over the moon, there鈥檚 no words聽to聽describe how I feel, it鈥檚 a long journey to get to where we are today, lots of聽hard work, late nights聽and聽sacrifices.

"However, nothing聽can compare to the sacrifice made by my family, loved ones, my New Zealand family. Without their support and聽encouragement wouldn鈥檛聽have got to where聽I am聽today.鈥

Chew first developed a passion for flying while completing mandatory military service for his country and since then has been determined to become a pilot.聽After completing his degree through the Flight Instructor Course,聽he wishes to聽one day聽work for Massey Aviation and to聽settle down in Palmerston North long-term.聽

鈥淚 want to represent the international students and community, I think in the past not many international students enrol into the programme because of culture or the fact they are not exposed to this industry,聽so hopefully after I鈥檝e finished the course,聽I鈥檒l be able to land a job with聽Massey and it will be the start of a blossoming future.鈥

He聽was also the representative of his聽cohort聽to present the聽鈥榬eflections鈥 speech where he gratefully acknowledged the聽unending聽support of family and friends, as well as the staff of the School of Aviation, who helped the聽group as they navigated their way through a normally challenging degree made聽tougher聽by the interruptions due to Covid in 2020.

Another wings recipient,聽Kohatu Brooking, from聽the East Cape,聽has already finished his聽Bachelor of Aviation聽degree聽and聽is now聽undertaking the Graduate Diploma in Aviation (Flight Instruction)聽programme.聽

He says the聽Flight Instructor Course聽emphasises聽self-directed and independent聽learning and聽seeing the聽student becoming聽increasingly self-reliant, and thus聽motivated to work hard to meet the higher expectations placed upon them.聽

Brooking聽has worked for Origin Air for over a year聽which he says has presented further opportunities;聽鈥淏eing from the East Cape there isn鈥檛 a lot of aviation up there,聽so it feels like I am doing them proud.鈥澛

Last聽year,聽the ceremonies were streamed online due to COVID-19聽restrictions,聽but this year saw the聽71st聽cohort聽and their聽families聽attending聽the ceremony in聽its usual聽format. Special聽guests and聽school benefactors were also able to attend the聽event聽to聽distribute聽their聽various awards.聽

Denzel Robertson was joined by his family, who flew down from Auckland to celebrate with him. He says聽he鈥檚聽very proud聽to have finished the last two years as he believes it was the hardest part of the course.

鈥淵ou can tell everyone is happy it is over,聽but聽at the same time聽sad that our journey with each other is coming to an end,鈥 he says.

When he finishes his degree,聽he wants to gain his flight instructor rating,聽allowing聽him to instruct which聽is the聽next step before he can fly for airlines.聽
