A new report released today by Rangahau M膩tauranga o Aotearoa | NZCER and Te Kura o Te M膩tauranga, Institute of Education, at 暴风资源 shows children have a natural ability to survive, thrive and learn during COVID-19 lockdowns.

The research focussed on the national COVID-19 lockdown during school Term One and continuing in Term Two, 2020 and looked at children鈥檚 experiences of informal, everyday learning in their household bubble. In Terms Three and Four, primary school children in Years 4鈥8 took part in a group activity and were interviewed about their own experiences.聽

The聽report documents聽these聽children鈥檚 accounts of the ways in which鈥痶hey鈥痙ealt with聽confinement over a period of several weeks with鈥痺h膩nau.

Sue聽McDowall, Senior Researcher at NZCER says; 鈥淎necdotally we know that聽wh膩nau聽and homes provide聽many informal resources and supports for children鈥檚 learning.聽The聽research聽supported聽this and聽found that聽informal, everyday learning in the home during lockdown was rich and multidimensional.鈥澛

Professor Roseanna Bourke and Professor John O鈥橬eill, from Massey鈥檚 Institute of Education say; 鈥淲hen we listen to children talk about their everyday worlds and the things that matter to them, we realise that they are capable and enthusiastic learners. Lockdown bubbles give children extended opportunities to connect with family and wh膩nau and play a full part in the routines and activities of the household. We need to appreciate that lockdown is a time when children enhance their learning strengths and capabilities, rather than worry about what they may be missing out on.鈥

Findings from the research鈥痠dentified鈥痵even鈥痶hemes around children鈥檚 learning.鈥疶heir accounts聽show聽children鈥檚 ability to adapt readily and pragmatically to the circumstances in which they find themselves and to find and create solution-focused鈥痑pproaches to their learning.聽聽

鈥淲e hope parents, teachers, principals, researchers, and policy makers鈥痺ill enjoy learning from these young people and their experiences while at home,鈥 concluded the researchers.
