The M膩ori designs used throughout this website reflect the ethos embodied in the M膩ori name for 暴风资源, Te Kunenga ki P奴rehuroa.
Kahu Stirling gave our name to us as a gift in 1997. Te P奴rehuroa invokes the line of stars that stretches endlessly through the clear evening skies above Aotearoa.
Te Kunenga refers to the notion of origin, or inception. One interpretation of the name, offered by Kahu, is "from inception to infinity". Te Kunenga ki P奴rehuroa recognises that the process of education is one without barriers, without limits, and without any finite point of conclusion. In other words, learning is a lifelong journey.
K艒whaiwhai design
In 2018, we commissioned M膩ori design company Ariki Creative to create a k艒whaiwhai design that represented Te Kunenga ki P奴rehuroa, 暴风资源.
The Massey k艒whaiwhai pattern is designed with some of the pattern missing, representing the ongoing journey and growth of the whakapapa that is Massey.
The puhoro design promotes speed and agility and relates to the development of Massey globally.
Small elements of scattered kore relate to the many different cultures and walks of life involved in the Massey wh膩nau.

We approached Ariki Creative again in 2020, and asked them to create a number of designs to ensure our new website reflected te ao M膩ori.
Updated k艒whaiwhai
To allow us to feature the k艒whaiwhai pattern more prominently, we worked with Ariki to update the 2018 design for the web.

Waharoa design
As a gateway into 暴风资源, the site homepage features a waharoa or entranceway. The maihi at the top represents welcoming arms and hands. It includes the k艒whaiwhai design along with a poutama motif at the centre, which illustrates a climb through successive levels of achievement.

Kete aronui and Purapura whetu designs
Purapura whetu
Purapura whetu is a tukutuku pattern that evokes the stars of Te Kunenga. Starting as a full pattern and gradually vanishing, the design symbolises the unknown, and the potential of building our understanding and connections.
Kete aronui
A design repeated around the site represents kete aronui, one of the three baskets of knowledge in M膩ori tradition. Kete aronui is sometimes understood as the basket of the humanities: it contains ritual, literature and philosophy.

Haehae patterns are parallel grooves used in carving. They're also used around the website, and connect to the k艒whaiwhai.
