M膩ori knowledge is unique to Aotearoa New Zealand. It's the foundation upon which we stand together in partnership. Creating and sharing knowledge helps us reach the highest possible levels of advancement and attainment. It provides a pathway for students to learn te reo M膩ori, and create a just and inclusive society and world.

The study of M膩ori knowledge introduces you to te ao M膩ori, the M膩ori world, and provides a basic understanding of te reo M膩ori. It gives you a sound background in areas such as:

  • contemporary M膩ori issues
  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • M膩ori culture and society
  • M膩ori policy and development.

M膩ori knowledge is a good fit if you:

Study te reo M膩ori

Te reo M膩ori is a taonga and an official language of Aotearoa New Zealand. Study te reo M膩ori at Massey and participate in ways that reinforce the everyday use of te reo.

With our te reo M膩ori courses, you'll become a confident speaker and writer of te reo M膩ori 鈥 and be able to share your skills in ways that express and reflect a M膩ori world view.

Our staff include winners of the Pikihuia Awards for M膩ori writers, and lecturers dedicated to providing creative learning experiences.

Learn and use M膩ori knowledge

Massey offers many ways to build skills and understanding in M膩ori culture, te reo M膩ori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

You can major in M膩ori studies or te reo M膩ori in arts degrees offered by Te P奴tahi-a-Toi, Massey's School of M膩ori Knowledge. Or you can explore M膩ori knowledge in relation to business, creative arts, health, humanities and social sciences, or sciences.

Pakihi 鈥 Business

Te Au Rangahau is a research centre in the Massey Business School. The name translates to "a pathway to M膩ori research in business". The centre aims to advance business and leadership knowledge that benefits the M膩ori economy.

Toi 鈥 Creative arts

Toioho ki 膧piti, M膩ori visual arts, recognises language, culture, tikanga and art as inseparable. Our bachelor's degree has a strong M膩ori kaupapa, with te reo, tikanga, and manaakitanga at its core.

We welcome students of M膩ori, P膩keh膩 and international indigenous heritage. We cater for all levels of te reo M膩ori.

As well as independent creative work, courses may cover:

  • M膩ori design processes, including cultural significance
  • M膩ori visual culture, including contemporary and traditional contexts
  • te reo M膩ori
  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi).

For qualifications such as health science, nursing and social work, specialists from Te P奴tahi-a-Toi teach courses on:

  • engaging with M膩ori
  • hauora (M膩ori health and wellbeing)
  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi in health practice.

These courses make sure you build basic competencies to work with M膩ori people, and can contribute to positive health outcomes for wh膩nau, iwi, hap奴 and M膩ori communities.

P奴kenga tangata 鈥 Humanities and social sciences

From history to politics, philosophy to psychology, our courses include M膩ori perspectives. Here are some examples:

  • planning, which includes M膩ori understandings of how people and nature are closely linked
  • politics and history, which explore topics such as iwi history, the politics of identity, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • writing and theatre, including M膩ori literatures and storytelling methods.

Also on offer are specialist qualifications taught in te reo, such as Te Aho T膩tairangi: Bachelor of Teaching and Learning Kura Kaupapa M膩ori.

From agribusiness to animal science, engineering to information technology, our science courses include M膩ori perspectives. Here are some examples:

  • agriculture, including traditional crops, future land use, and opportunities for M膩ori in horticulture, food innovation, and forestry
  • natural environment, including how environmental management or natural resource policies can reflect M膩ori interests
  • science and sustainability courses (compulsory for students in agriculture and horticulture, computer science and IT, engineering, and sciences) include M膩ori knowledge modules taught by specialists from Te P奴tahi-a-Toi.

Undergraduate study

Undergraduate study An undergraduate qualification is generally the first thing you鈥檒l study at university. In some qualifications you can choose what subject you鈥檇 like to specialise in.

Bachelor's degrees

Degrees are the standard qualifications you do at university 鈥 the most common is called a bachelor鈥檚. Degrees give you enough time to explore your interests, and also focus on specific subjects.

Graduate certificates

Graduate certificates let you study in a subject you're interested in without doing a second bachelor's degree. Or you can use it as a bridge to postgraduate study if you already have an undergraduate degree.

Undergraduate diplomas

Undergraduate diplomas let you try university study before you commit to a degree. They鈥檙e also useful if you need to advance your career.

Graduate diplomas can help you advance to postgraduate study or research in a subject you haven鈥檛 majored in for your undergraduate study.

Postgraduate study

Postgraduate study Once you鈥檝e graduated with a bachelor鈥檚 degree 鈥 or have equivalent experience 鈥 you鈥檒l be ready to take on postgraduate study.

Master's degrees

A master's degree normally builds on a main subject of study from your undergraduate degree.

Postgraduate diplomas

Postgraduate diplomas are postgraduate-level qualifications that are longer than a postgraduate certificate. If you鈥檙e successful, you might be able to use the credits towards the longer master鈥檚 degree.

PhD and other doctoral degrees

Doctoral degrees, including PhDs, are the highest degrees we award. They鈥檙e very demanding and their entry criteria reflect this.

Te Rau Karamu Marae provides stunning art-filled learning and teaching spaces and sits at the heart of the Wellington campus.

Te Whare Taupua

The M膩ori space on our Auckland campus. Te Whare Taupua is home to Te Rau Tauawhi, the M膩ori student support centre. While it's mostly a student space, it's also used for M膩ori events.
