Hochschule M眉nchen University of Applied Sciences (HM) was founded in 1971. With more than 18,000 students, it is the largest university of its kind in Bavaria and one of the largest in Germany. The university offers a number of classes in English,聽but Massey students with German language ability will be able to select from any of the courses offered.聽Courses at HM have a strong focus on application-oriented instruction.
Munich, Germany鈥檚 third-largest city with over 1 million people, lies on the elevated plains of Upper Bavaria.聽 It is聽about 50 km north of the northern edge of the Alps,聽one of the great mountain range systems of Europe. Caf茅 culture is strong in Munich, especially during the summer. There are many restaurants accommodating all preferences of cuisine, and possibly the most important free time activity during the summer: the beer gardens.
Munich is an historic city with a range of cultural attractions.聽 It is also a leading聽economic centre, and many major companies, including Siemens and BMW, have their global headquarters in Munich.
Exchange students at HM can choose to have a German student buddy, who will help show new students around the campus and the city and settle into life at HM. They can also participate in the events the International Club organises for exchange students during the semester.
Exchange Student Travel Grant
New Zealand citizens and permanent residents who apply to go on exchange to HM are automatically considered for a 暴风资源 Exchange Student Travel Grant.聽 No additional paperwork needs to be submitted.
Courses
There are a selection of courses taught in English each semester (see the link below) in subject areas including聽Technology, Engineering, Business, Tourism Management, Social Sciences and General Studies.
HM also offers small group projects facilitated in English for third-year students in Industrial Design, Photographic Design, and Communication Design.聽These projects change each semester.聽Email the International Mobility team for more information.
German language lessons
HM offers free preparatory German language courses for exchange students prior to every winter semester.聽The classes are for 20 hours per week over two weeks, starting in early September.聽Students can earn 3 ECTS for successfully completing the course.聽Places are limited and assigned on a first come/first serve basis. During the semester, exchange students can also take German language classes on many levels, from beginner to advanced.
Academic calendar
Hochschule M眉nchen University of Applied Sciences works on a semester basis with two semesters in each academic year.
WS = Winter Semester (early October聽to mid-January, with exams ending mid-February) - correlates to Massey Semester Two
SS = Summer Semester (mid-March聽to early July, with exams ending late聽July) - correlates to Massey Semester One
Exchange students are expected to arrive early in order to be able to participate in the Orientation Days (Mid September for the WS, early March for the SS).
Items to note
HM does not own any residence halls or flats and cannot guarantee the availability of housing.聽 The majority of students studying in Munich rely on private accommodation.聽The HM staff will help you search for housing.
All students are required to pay a mandatory student services fee of 鈧90 per semester (subject to change) to support the administering bodies responsible for accommodation and refectories. Students can also get reduced tickets for public transport in Munich and in Germany.

HM strongly recommends students from Non-EU countries take out a German public health insurance policy as this will meet the German legislative requirements.
