The University of Edinburgh is one of the UK鈥檚 most prestigious universities and highly ranked internationally. It was founded in 1583 and has been attracting international students for over four centuries. In terms of the quality of its teaching and research, it is considered one of the leaders not only in the UK but in Europe and beyond.聽 Famous alumni include Charles Darwin (naturalist), David Hume (philosopher), Joseph Lister (surgeon), Piers Sellers (NASA astronaut), and writers Robert Louis Stevenson, Ian Rankin and J K Rowling.

The University of Edinburgh is also one of the UK鈥檚 larger, more diverse universities, with a current student population of over 30,000. More than 11,000 of these students are international and are drawn from聽over 130聽different countries.聽 The University also has a very Scottish character, and a wide range of courses in Scottish, Celtic and Gaelic Studies are available.

The University of Edinburgh has two campuses,聽George Square (GS) and the King鈥檚 Buildings (KB), with a free shuttle bus travelling between the two.聽

Credit system

Under the semester system the majority of聽courses at Edinburgh are worth聽20 credits (single-semester) or 40 credits (full-year). Students are expected to take the normal academic load of 60 credits per semester.

Academic calendar

The first semester starts in September and concludes in December. Semester two begins in January and ends in May.
