The University of Montana is located in Missoula, the city sister of Palmerston North. Massey students who attend an exchange at Missoula are treated with special recognition, due to the long relationship between Massey and Montana.

Located at the heart of western Montana鈥檚 stunning natural landscape, UM is a magnet not only for top-notch teachers and researchers, but also for students from across the country and around the globe. A city within a city - with its own eateries, stores, medical facilities, banking and postal services, and zip code - UM has an increasingly diverse population and rich culture.

If you love sport and outdoor activities, the University of Montana is perfectly located between mountains for skiing or snowboarding and three rivers for water activities like kayaking. The University has a women鈥檚 rugby team, a great way to tour the State for competition games.

Credit system

Students should take 15 semester credits.聽 This should equate to 60 Massey credits.

Postgraduate exchange students should enrol in a minimum of 9 credits per semester.

Course codes

Courses numbered 200-299 at Montana equate to 100-level at Massey. 300-499 courses equate to 200-level courses at Massey.聽 400-499 Courses equate to 300-level at Massey.

Academic calendar

The聽Fall semester begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the Spring semester begins in late January and ends聽in mid-May.

Health insurance

Adequate health insurance is required by law for all exchange students going to the USA.聽 Travel insurance alone will not provide the appropriate coverage.聽 Health insurance plans in the USA are typically more expensive than plans in New Zealand.

Be sure you check the university鈥檚 insurance requirements and enrol in the appropriate plan.

Visas

You will need to have a J-1 exchange visitor visa to enter the U.S. You cannot study full-time at the university on either a B-2 tourist visa or the visa waiver program.
